To say that vintage Japanese guitars are superior instruments would be an understatement. Fernandes guitars in particular were some of the early prognosticators of the SuperStrat movement in the 1980’s and this guitar is a fine example of the breed. Since these earlier Japanese guitars are difficult to date and identify and many of them lack serial numbers, catalog I.D.’ing seems to be the best method.
This one appears to be a later 1980’s to early 1990’s Fernandes “The Function” SSH-40. This one has a slim profile maple bolt-on neck with a rosewood board, a two point vintage style tremolo and high output passive pickups in a hum-single-single configuration with a master tone and volume. As one would expect in a 30-something year old guitar, there is some playwear evident. There are a few larger chips and several small dimples and impressions. The rear of the guitar in particular is peppered with small dings. One of the knobs is MIA. Total weight is 8.05 lb.
Wear and tear aside, this guitar is a great player! The action is low and fast and the pickups are plenty powerful with nice punch yet they still manage to maintain clarity and sparkle.
